What I Learned from the 2019 US Open Pickleball Championships

Last week, I was fortunate enough to participate in four events at the 2019 US Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida, and walked away with a gold medal in the Women’s Doubles 5.0 19+ event with my partner, Anna Leigh Waters, and a bronze medal in the Mixed Doubles 4.5 19+ event with my partner, Seth Muse (also, big shoutouts to my talented partner, Rachel Oxenden, in the Women's Age 30+ event and my talented partner, Jeronimo Simonovis-Armas, in the Mixed Age 25+ event). From playing in these four events—with some wins and some losses—and from enjoying some time at the US Open as a spectator and pickleball fan, I learned some valuable lessons that I hope will improve my pickleball game and make me stronger the next time that I step on to the pickleball courts. So, here are my takeaways from the 2019 US Open Pickleball Championships...

The 2018 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships Mixed Pro Doubles final saw a familiar matchup between Simone Jardim/Kyle Yates and Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright—the same match-up that we saw seven months earlier in the 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship. Although a familiar match-up, the outcome was very different, as Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright took down the reigning US Open champs, Simone Jardim/Kyle Yates. As with the 2018 US Open, we were curious what the breakdown of shots would be at the highest level of pickleball between male and female teammates. We were also curious if we could find any trends that led to different victors—Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright.

The sport of pickleball is pure fun. People of all ages—from kids to senior citizens—can join on one common pickleball court, have fun, and all act like kids. I love when this pure fun and enjoyment transcends into other aspects of various Picklers lives. In other words, I love when pickleball spills over into, and inspires us in, our other hobbies and passions (yes, shocking as it may seem, some Picklers find time for other hobbies and passions 😊).

I have now had the pleasure of playing pickleball on two different continents—North America and Europe. This past week, I played with two different pickleball clubs in the Midlands of England, and what I learned from this past week is that no matter where you play, (1) the game is the same, and (2) the people on the pickleball court are brilliant!
