What to Do When You Are Having an “Off Day” on the Pickleball Court

News Stacie Townsend 06-26-2023

We all have “off days” on the pickleball court, where things simply are not clicking or coming together. When this happens, how do you boost your confidence and maintain your composure in order to make the most of your pickleball play?

First, instead of dwelling on your current performance or the score, shift your focus to the present moment and the actions that you can control. Concentrate on executing each shot to the best of your ability, focusing on technique, strategy, and making smart decisions on the pickleball court. By shifting your focus to the process, you detach yourself from the pressure of the outcome and allow yourself to regain confidence in your skills. Remind yourself of your past successes, acknowledge that everyone has off days, and trust that you have the capability to improve your performance on the pickleball court. Plus, “be a goldfish” and quickly forget and reset after any mistakes.

Additionally, practice positive self-talk (and positive self-talk with your partner). Replace negative thoughts or self-criticism with encouraging and supportive statements. Remind yourself of your strengths, past achievements, and your potential to perform well on the pickleball court. Visualize successful shots and imagine yourself playing at your best.

Furthermore, take a moment to breathe deeply and relax (and in a competitive environment, maybe even take a time-out during a pickleball match). Use deep breathing exercises to calm your mind, reduce tension, and refocus your energy. Relaxation techniques can help you reset your mindset and regain confidence before the next rally.

Lastly, maintain a growth mindset on the pickleball court. View setbacks or less-than-ideal performances as learning experiences rather than failures. Embrace the opportunity to analyze your pickleball game, identify areas for improvement, and commit to continuous development of your pickleball skills and strategies. Confidence on the pickleball court can be built through perseverance and a belief in your capacity to improve over time.

Remember that your confidence can fluctuate during your pickleball “career” or even during a pickleball game, and it is normal to experience ups and downs. By focusing on the process, practicing positive self-talk, staying relaxed, and maintaining a growth mindset, you can boost your confidence and maintain your composure even when you feel you are not playing your best on the pickleball court.
