How Many Shots Did it Take to Win the 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship?

News Stacie Townsend 05-27-2018

Commonly in mixed doubles pickleball matches (especially in tournament settings), you have a sense that one team is targeting the female player on the other team. With the presentation by CBS Sports Network of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship between Simone Jardim/Kyle Yates and Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright this past Friday night (which was played in Naples, Florida back in April), we were curious what the breakdown of shots would be at the highest level of pickleball between male and female teammates. Based on our own calculations, here is what we found:

  • Almost 1,000 shots (994 to be more exact) were played in the 3-game 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship match.
  • The longest rally of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship was a continuous 57 shots!
  • Both Simone Jardim and Lucy Kovalova had to zone in on the most shots for their respective pickleball team duos. Simone took about 78.44% of the match shots for her and Kyle Yates, while Lucy took about 66.33% of the match shots for her and Matt Wright.
  • Simone might have had to work the hardest throughout the championship pickleball match, as she connected on almost 40% of all match shots.
  • Kyle touched the pickleball the least throughout the match, as he connected on a little more than 10% of all match shots.

For a more detailed breakdown, check out the chart below. What are your thoughts on these numbers? Could you stay in a 57-point rally, or 1,000-point pickleball match? Have you experienced a similar breakdown when playing mixed doubles pickleball?
