What Did You Take Away from the 2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles and Women’s Pro Doubles Championships?

News Stacie Townsend 06-02-2018
I hope all of you Picklers out there had the opportunity to catch the CBS Sports Network’s presentation tonight of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles Championship between Kyle Yates/Matt Wright and Dave Weinbach/Marcin Rozpedski, as well as the 2018 US Open Pickleball Women’s Pro Doubles Championship between Simone Jardim/Corrine Carr and Irina Tereschenko/Lucy Kovalova (which were both played in Naples, Florida back in April). In case you did not have a chance to watch the pickleball presentation, here are a few takeaways:

2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles Championship

  • Kyle Yates and Matt Wright took home the gold, as they defeated Dave Weinbach and Marcin Rozpedski in two matches (11-3, 11-9).
  • Almost 1,000 shots (938 to be more exact) were played in the two-game 2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles Championship match.
  • The longest rally of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles Championship was a continuous 76 shots (which far exceeded the longest rally of 57 shots during the 2018 US Open Pickleball Mixed Pro Doubles Championship)!
  • Both Kyle Yates and Marcin Rozpedski had to zone in on the most shots for their respective pickleball team duos. Kyle took about 59.70% of the match shots for him and Matt Wright, while Marcin took about 62.05% of the match shots for him and Dave Weinbach.
  • Marcin (who is now recovering from knee surgery, which he had after the US Open) might have had to work the hardest throughout the championship pickleball match, as he connected on the most match shots of any of the four pickleball men’s pros.
  • Dave touched the pickleball the least throughout the match, as he connected on a little less than 19% of all match shots.

2018 US Open Pickleball Women’s Pro Doubles Championship

  • Simone Jardim and Corrine Carr took home the gold, as they defeated Irina Tereschenko and Lucy Kovalova in three matches (8-11, 11-9, 11-6).
  • Unfortunately, CBS Sports Network edited quite a bit of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Women’s Pro Doubles Championship. CBS Sports Network cut out all points in Game 1 between a 6-3 Simone/Corrine lead to an 8-8 tie, all points in Game 2 from the start of the match to 3-1 lead in favor of Irina/Lucy and all points after a 10-9 Simone/Corrine lead, and all points in Game 3 from the start of the match to 6-5 Simone/Corrine lead.
  • By our calculation, 813 shots by the four women’s pickleball pros were aired in the broadcast.
  • Of the aired broadcast, the longest rally of the 2018 US Open Pickleball Women’s Pro Doubles Championship was a continuous 34 shots (which was less than half of the longest rally during the 2018 US Open Pickleball Men’s Pro Doubles Championship).
  • Corrine Carr had to zone in on the most shots throughout the match, as she took about two of every three shots for her team and one-third of the shots played overall between the four women’s pickleball pros. Corrine was really targeted in Game 1, before Simone Jardim seemed to find a way to force herself into more pickleball shots and play more of the court throughout Games 2 and 3.
  • Simone touched the pickleball the least throughout the match, as she connected on a little less than 17% of all match shots.
  • Irina Tereschenko and Lucy Kovalova split the labor on the pickleball court, as Irina Tereschenko took about 53% of the shots, while Lucy Kovalova took about 47% of the shots.

For a more detailed breakdown, check out the charts below. What are your thoughts on these numbers? Could you stay in a 76-point rally? What are your thoughts on CBS Sports Network’s shortened broadcast for the 2018 US Open Pickleball Women’s Pro Championship?
